OK I stand to be corrected then :) in Slackware patches = packages. Just 
seems rather surprising then that the www.slackware.com/pb/ page would 
provide the patches option if there are no patches.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions Jason, William and Roy. I am now in 
the know.
