[Slapt-get-user] Upgrade remote system

Hi,

I have a remote Slackware system which I'd like to upgrade to either
Slackware 11 or 12. I don't mind which - possibly 11 causes less
upgrade issues since it uses the 2.4 kernel.

All the upgrade instructions I can find include switching to single user
mode with

telinit 1

as the very first step. However, if I do that, I'll loose the network
connection, and have to travel over to sort out the machine.

Is it possible to get through an upgrade without switching to single
user? I would be the only user on the system, although other system
processes could well still be active.
