[Slapt-get-user] iv just downloaded and i think installed version 0.9.8a

I have misunderstood what exactly you have meant. I thought you wanted to just update "slapt-get", it seems not the case. In this case, you will need to type in slapt-get --install <program name>.  for help you could try slapt-get --? for all options if I recall or --help. Make sure you have a list of sources for slackware update sites.

Again  

slapt-get --install  whateverprogram

slapt-get --help   <- nice to see what slapt get can do.
